Nucleo-F302R8

Nucleo STM32F302R8 Interrupts – GPIO User Button External Interrupt

This interrupt application that we will implement will make the LED blink at different time intervals when the blue user button is pressed.

That is, while it will make it blink twice a second with one press, it will flash once every two seconds with another press.

Interrupts can be driven by software or hardware. In ARM terminology all interrupts are called exceptions.

In the Cortex-M, external or internal interrupts are use the same core peripheral: Nested Vector Interrupt Controller, or NVIC.

Depending on the used processor, this peripheral can support hundreds of interrupts, with multiple priority levels.

An interrupt stops an ongoing program execution and requires the MCU to execute specialized code ISR (interrupt service routine or interrupt handler) related to the event that initiated the interrupt.

External Interrupts

External interrupts originating from GPIO pins are connected to NVIC with EXTI (external interrupt controller).

Any of the STM32F302R8’s GPIO pins (51) can be used as an interrupt source (up to 23 of them could be active at any specific time).

Before starting our example, keep in mind that the blue user button (GPIO PC13) on the board is grouped with EXTI15_10_IRQ.

The ISR contains code that going to toggle LD2 (green LED on board) which is connected to GPIO PB13.

ISR to be updated in stm32f3xx_it.c

We need to update stm32f3xx_it.c file to handle interrupt.
